This is almost certainly a permissions issue. Which user runs your Tomcat? Which user owns the [dspace] directory, assetstore and everything under it? Double check that it's the same user and that he owns everything under [dspace]. Is there any chance that you're running 32-bit linux with a PAE kernel (in order to address more than 4 GB of RAM)?
