Hi Monika

I think you have to ask if that's helpful to users, and the answer is probably
"no".

By my unsupported reckoning, this information is useful to technical people
only. A metadata element (generator) or a comment in the HTML source are where
I would look in the first instance for this info. (I was slightly surprised not
see it in the older versions but glad it is now implemented. I thought it was
standard practice.)

(And it's worth noting that you can see this more easily in Firefox from the
page by simply choosing "View Page Info" from its context (right-click) menu.
There's a list in the "general" tab under "Meta". That doesn't involve trawling
through HTML.)

If specific repository instances want to indicate they use DSpace (perhaps out
of gratitude to its producers), these are also options:

* behind a "Built with DSpace" (or similar) link, probably using a logo - a
brief page explaining that DSpace is used and which version, with links to the
project
* as a paragraph with version and link to the project on an already existing
"About" page - that's probably where I'd expect to find it as a non-technical
user.

Ultimately these are template issues, but it's worthwhile setting good examples
out of the box for sure.

Hope that's useful input.

Cheers

Subject: Re: [Dspace-tech] DSPACE version

yes that does help - for now
and yes it is available in version 3 - I am almost done merging my changes

I think it would make sense to include the version in the page footer -
something along the lines of

DSpace Software 3.0 Copyright (c) 2002-2010 Duraspace - Feedback

What do you think ?

Monika

Hi, Monika, if you "view source" on a page of the repository in question,
regardless of which UI it runs (jspui or xmlui) near the top you'll see a
tag that looks like:

<meta name="Generator" content="DSpace 4.0-SNAPSHOT" />

or

<meta name="Generator" content="DSpace 4.1" />

If it says "4.0-SNAPSHOT," that repository is running a version of master,
from the 3.x era. Same goes for other SNAPSHOT versions (just subtract 1
from it to figure out what version of the source code it's based on).

Hope that helps.
