Just to fix a mistake, the right name of USP librarian is Tiago "Murakami".

Assunto: PUCRS University (Brazil) released DSpace v.4.1 JSPUI (upgraded from
v.1.6.2)

Dear fellows,

PUCRS University (city of Porto Alegre, Brazil) is proud to announce that its
Institutional Repository was released today with DSpace version 4.1 (JSPUI),
after a straight upgrade from version 1.6.2 (aso JSPUI), and is available at:
http://repositorio.pucrs.br

The upgrade process was pretty smooth and easier than we imagined!

Two teams worked together for that: from PUCRS’ IT Department (GTIT): Mr. Remo
Bisio and Mr. Roberto Schroeder (Developers and Systems Analysts) and from
PUCRS’ Central Library: Mr. Roberto Moura, Ms. Debora Araujo, Ms. Ligia Freitas
and Mr. Michelangelo Viana (all four Systems Librarians).

Tiago Muramaki (Systems Librarian) and Jan Lara (Systems Analyst) both from USP
University (Sao Paulo, Brasil) suggested the upgrade process, described here:

- Performed a default installation of DSpace 4.1 on a separate server (in our
case it was done using a VMware, CentOS release 6.5 final);
>From 1.6.2 server:
- Stopped data entry and export the database and assetstore + retain
configuration;
On 4.1 server:
- Imported the database and assetstore;
- Applied PostgreSQL database patches consecutively: from 1.6.2 to the next and
so on, until reaching same database structure of 4.1;
- Applied in 4.1 settings files the same adopted on 1.6.2: dspace.cfg,
default.license, input-forms.xml, item-submission.xml, email templates,
messages_LNG.properties = take care to include the new lines (we made it by
comparing 1.6.2>4.1 using windiff)
- Applied UI customizations (done mainly in JSP files, some in CSS and very few
on ItemTag.java file). This presentation from Andrea Bollini (Cineca's Product
Manager) was very important, where we find out valuable instructions to
customize JSPUI look & feel, besides another important version 4.1 info:
http://pt.slideshare.net/DuraSpace/2514-dspace-user-interface-innovation-presentation-slides
- Then, after performed a rebuild (mvn+ant) and restart Tomcat, the DSPACE 4.1
were running with communities/collections structure, records (metadata) and its
assets (objects), users and permissions that were defined in version 1.6.2.

We also applied some JQuery scripts (see in in the HTML Source of any page) to
dynamically “translate” communities and collections names from PT_BR to EN an
to ES. It would be great that future releases of DSpace had localization
nativelly for communities and collections names/description.

Best Regards!

Michelangelo
