Vinod, I think there is no problem doing this. We use exactly the same thing on our server for years and it works flawessly. This is the link to our server: http://dspace.c3sl.ufpr.br/dspace/ if you want to test it. We did it changing the configuration on dspace.cfg/build.properties and renaming it's directory to "dspace".
