Those bugs are definitely what I am seeing. Our local theme was originally
built on the Mirage2_precompiled code base in DSpace 4.2 (later migrated to
4.3). When we went to 5.1, I did not migrate these changes to the newest
Mirage 2, but kept them in our local theme. Maybe that's what is causing these
errors.
I will start with a clean compile of 5.1 with Mirage 2 and see if we still see
these errors, and, if not, then start adding in our local changes. to the
Mirage 2 theme in dspace/modules/xmlui-mirage2.

probably just a piece of the puzzle at this point, but your report made me
think about:

These fixes made it into 5.0 so you're probably seeing something different.
But I would definitely look in the area of the new metadata 4 all code that
comes with DSpace 5.

Also, when a person tries to log in using Shibboleth (also worked in 4.3), we
get “AUTHENTICATION FAILED” and I see the following in the logs:
