Something similar,
we made a prototype that used (in XMLUI) the mets.xml (included in the METS bundle) to alter the visualization of a complex object from a flat view to a hierachical one. We used the <structmap><type =logical> part of the mets to show the volume-chapter structure of the distinct pages of the object

IMHO, perhaps not very practical (answering your second question),
