Well, perhaps a workaround rather than a solution.
Because of what I wrote above, I changed the filter to the internal hash one.
I then created a shell script to run dspam with all its required variables,
and configured getmail to call the script , rather than dspam itself. One
message has now been received and filtered, and all the dspam tags are showing.
