Hi Alt

I'm not a programmer, but I've made my living with computing by
understanding (or trying to understand!) how to implement what other
people create. Being a good sys admin and being able to glue things
together are good as a general goal if you're looking to have a career
in IT. If it turns out you have the aptitude to be a good programmer,
then by all means concentrate on that.

Personally I've met lots of mediocre programmers and very few people who
are able to see the bigger picture, understand the business drivers
behind why people use IT and help create useful stuff people will buy -
and for better or worse, money makes the world go around.

I think at your age I'd follow whatever you are interested in. There's
plenty of time to find out what you like and enjoy. If you're then able
to make a career out of it, great!

My other main tip would be not to forget the 'softer' skills in life.
If you're a genius techie but are unable to communicate your ideas well
and work with other people, you won't get far!

Chris
