There are two things I wish I had known before buying my IBM R50e.

  1. No installation disks.
  2. The warranty can be extended on IBM.com only if you buy the
laptop in the USA.  The salesman lied.

When I realized I had no disks, I immediately made a Norton Ghost
image of the whole drive for safekeeping.  I know myself, and I knew
that my Windows would go FUBAR sooner or later.

Then I managed to install Suse Linux 10.0 successfully, resizing the
Win partition in the process.  Very impressed.

So I Ghosted the whole drive again for safekeeping.  This _killed_
the whole setup and made the PC unbootable.

No problem, I thought, I have a Ghost image of the original disk
setup!  No joy - the laptop complained about a digital signature not
matching.  I also got a nasty look from my wife for wiping out my
laptop after just one day.

Anyway, I reformatted everything and installed my own WinXP + Suse.
To their credit, I applaud IBM for making all the drivers and extra
goodies available and easy to find.  The IBM Diagnostic partition is
gone, but I can't imagine having used it anyway.

I paid for that Windows license, and I have nothing to show for it.
Does this count as vaporware?
