The access points in automatic speed selection are turning the speed
down when the percentage of lost frames is over a certain limit. With
auto negotiation you will be thus be just over the critical border when
the packet loss starts. So your probability to loose packets is higher
with auto-speed selection. When you select a speed lower then that, the
probability of loosing individual packets goes down as well.
