Thanks for this thread. My SB controller failed after a power outage and
I feared it was the device itself. To test I used two loose wires
connected to a 5V floodlight charger and sure enough the controller came
back to life.

So I pried the rubber from the stand's bottom which exposes a large
rectangular pull relief. I cut off the long end of the cable and then
cut the pull relief mid way, being careful not to touch the cable inside
it. Tearing off the cut section this exposes almost 2cm of shielded wire
where the shield is earth and the wire is +5V. Doing a similar thing
with an obsolete USB printer cable I had lying around, keeping around
7mm of its pull relief, I soldered the black and red wires (which are
pretty thin compared to the oversized original wire) to the wires in the
stand which I then isolated and stuck it into the space where the
original pull relief had been, after which I glued back the rubber. So
now I have a stand with a cable that has a standard USB-A connector that
will plug into any phone charge adapter.
