I saw somewhere a comparison of 8.0 and 7.6 performance claiming that 7.6
ran slightly faster on 68040s. But in my experience it's one of those
differences that looks good on paper but is almost imperceivable in the
flesh.

Not to muddy the waters, but you can take the OT and AppleTalk versions
that run under 8.1 and use them under 7.6.1. I have a Quadra 800 running
that configuration now --- too many demons under 7.6.1's networking
versions. It's been rock steady, and networks flawlessly.

However, I've got 8.1 running on my Duo 280c. I've reasoned it all out
with charts and graphs and stuff, and convinced myself that I *should* be
running 7.6.1 (with 8.1 networking) on the Duo. But wouldn't you know, I
just *can't* force myself to dump 8.1 on the Duo --- I guess I've grown
soft and need all the extra bells and whistles of 8.1, but the pop-up
windows have become indispensible to me on the Duo's small screen.

I would have thought that the disadvantages of 8.6's size on a 2300 would
have been outweighed by its being entirely PPC native. But that's just
speculation on my part.
