I'm not a metallurgist but in my experience with powerbooks (driven by my
sometimes modest financial state), I have had to fix a sub frame or two that
that had met its match with a hard floor.
I can tell you on the two duos I've done this to it is defiantly not coated
plastic. Coated plastic would not stand up to the heat of a 35 watt
soldering iron, or take a bead of 60/40.
The 5300's, and 3400's on the other hand seem to be as you described.
Just my 2 cents.
