I have installed Appleworks 5 on 68040 machines and had it work fine.
In fact I just opened up the installer on my iMac disk and confirmed that
there is a 68k version of Appleworks 5 so it should run fine provided you
have enough RAM. I like using Appleworks 5 because it is alot more
convenient for working with various file types. You can open/save documents
in almost any file type you'll encounter from MacWrite to Word 6 and such.
I really enjoy getting some use out of these older computers as well.
My 280c is just starting to come into its own with online banking! Haha!
