You can plug the power adapter in in any order with the powerbook on, 
asleep, or off. Did you know: All laptops are equipped with their own 
UPS. How can fail with no ill effect at all.

It is OK and in fact PREFERRED that you eject PC cards with the power on 
using the software controls.

Modem and ethernet dongles can be plugged in anytime.\
