It sounds like the directory is damaged on the external hard drive. Or
possibly trouble with the driver. Try running a drive utility such as Norton
or even Apple's Disk First Aid to repair it.

I don't think it's the 2300 itself. Keep in mind too that the external drive
is SCSI while the internal drive is ATA/IDE. Two different busses.
