It concerns me a bit that they are apparently
replacing the AC adapters with the Pismo/iBook
original model. I bought one of those as a second
adapter and although the plug is ostensibly the same
diameter, it is a very tight fit on my WallStreet's
power connector and IMO requires inordinate force to
remove. Within weeks the power/sound board failed,
after two years of using the original adapter.
This seems to be one of the most common WallStreet
failures, after the screen hinge problem, and Apple
likewise considers it "normal wear and tear." I
managed to obtain a reconditioned replacement part and
opened up the WallStreet myself. It pissed me off a
bit when I saw that the power connector shell is only
attached to the sound board on two sides which allows
it to easily rock back and forth on its solder pads,
which eventually crack. It seems like it wouldn't be
that hard to design it so that the third side is
locked to the board so it won't pivot so easily.
It also concerns me a bit that Apple is using the
computer serial number a a first level screen, unless
the problem occurs because of an interaction between
the adapter and a specific internal charging system.
These adapters were sold as replacements for earlier
models like the 1400, 2400, and 3400, and people with
later models bought them because they're more compact
and packable than the stylish "UFO". But in online
forums, anyone who even mildly questions Apple's
benevolent generosity in replacing these adapters
after only 6 complaints gets labeled a "whiner."
I believe there have to have been more than 6
incidents. When a company announces a "voluntary"
recall in conjunction with the CPSC, it usually means
they decided not to fight an involuntary recall. And
the CPSC generally doesn't get concerned about a small
number of incidents even if they involve dead
children, although there have been exceptions.
