This is true.  We have a no-name brand which has a Matsushita drive inside
which will boot our 2400 (on a good day).  I believe that Matsushita made
CD-ROMs for Apple for many years.

By the way, starting a Powerbook 2400 often takes a bit of voodoo even with
an Apple drive.  Here is my procedure:

To Start PB2400 on CD ROM: This worked:
Insert CD into drive
Power off both CD and Powerbook
Plug in SCSI cable
Power on CD ROM Drive
Wait 10 seconds
Power on the Powerbook
Wait 2 seconds
Hold Down C Key

You will see a flashing ? for a few seconds, then the CD-ROM will start
grinding.
