With 8.1 and a recent version of Open Transport, there's very little that you can't run. At least nothing of any consequence. My personal belief is that any arguments about the relative speed of 8.1 and 7.6.1 are totally subjective -- it depends on your style of usage. The one argument that is really numerical is RAM and HD usage. But, if you install 8.1 "for this Mac" and then take care to delete all the many MB of extraneous print drivers, the HD usage isn't too bad. And it sounds like, given your machine's amount of RAM, there should be absolutely no issues w.r.t.
