The Duo doesn't need to be on to charge the battery - it will recharge as long as the Duo is plugged in, whether running, asleep, or off. In fact the charge can potentially go quicker while the Duo isn't running, since more power is available. The only time the battery can't be charged is when the independent circuit responsible for it - the Power Manager chip - has been cleared of its operating code. This is easily detectable on 270-280c Duos (and the PB 2400c) by the steady green light while the Duo is turned off. Booting the OS reloads the code (this is why you used to need things like the "Type III battery" extension in some cases, btw, like using such a battery with a pre-280 Duo and System 7.1). Note that that same Green Light is also the one in "GLOD", though it's not really the light you should fear, it's the "click"-only condition when you try and start the computer (which can happen with or without the green light - typically without to start, then the PM code will be lost during the mounting rescue attempts and PRAM zapping). The light is actually a positive diagnostic, which is basically a good thing (so is the click sound for that matter, it's the lack of anything after it that really strikes fear in our hearts ;). ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
