No. The separate battery charger, model M1812 that clicks on the AC adapter, is just a convenience thing to charge up to two batteries. If you leave you Duo plugged, the AC adapter will recharge the battery. There are two models of the battery charger. I cannot remember the model number for the first one but it may need an upudate to be used with Type III battery if you're running System 7.1.
