Hi Folks:
This message piggy-backs on Nicole's. Helping either of us helps both, perhaps.
Naifs: GLOD is explained at:
http://webobjects.uwaterloo.ca/mac2400/power_reset_by_sydney_ho.htm
CLOD: is also known as 'Click of Death": Nicole: I expect your machine does
that (faint, faint click) when goes out of GLOD mode and into the other mode.
MY Situation:
So, I own TWO 2400's. Both started GLODing/CLODing alternately at about the
same time. Just after I swapped a lot of files between them. Creepy.
One is now in permanent alternating GLOD/CLOD. I went so far as to detach
the PRAM battery at two locations (near as I can tell, I saw two, anyway)
for 12 hours and have, during that time and at other times, done all sorts
of incantations and variations on Sydney Ho's power reset (see link above).
The second machine does the GLOD/CLOD dance regularly only after a hard
shut-down, when it runs out of juice from the battery. Power reset works
for it.
Questions:
1. Might a Totally Dead pram battery CAUSE GLOD? Unlikely, since
disconnecting it works to stop GLOD for some, but I thought I'd ask.
2. Are there any real disadvantages to having a dead pram battery, beyond
having to reset the clock after whoopsie-daisy moments? I'd like to live
without prying further into a machine I don't know well...
3. I've heard (by searching the list archive via
http://www.mail-archive.com/duolist%40lists.themacintoshguy.com/) that GLOD
is often due to a "bad processor" or a "bad processor board" or a "bad
mother board." The processor board and the mother board are different, I
believe. If I need a new processor board, then does upgrading to a G3
solve this problem? I reckon if I'm replacing, I might as well upgrade.
4. Any other hints? Recommendations? Incantations? Otherwise, I'll probably
be sending at least one machine off to ...ah, where did I put his
name/address? The repairman raved about on this list. I'll find it in my
files, somewhere.
Thanks,
Eric
