I installed LinuxPPC on a 2400c a year ago, but not for long: problems with PC card enabling and no power saving features so that the computer became too hot to the touch in no time. Now I use Tenon's MachTen, which is basically an implementation of BSD Unix 4 on top of classic MacOS. The advantages are that you can install it in five minutes and have it working, no partitioning required, and PC cards and zip drives and everything works well as it uses the MacOS drivers; the snags are that it's a tad slower than Linux, the manual is not useful for beginners, some apps don't compile, and above all, Tenon's support just plain sucks. I use it for connectivity with Unix machines and writing Fortran, C, C++ and Perl code, and I am very satisfied. A g3 upgrade turns the 2400c into a mean UNIX workstation, but it's not mandatory. To sum it up: MachTen works well on even a stock 2400c/180 for Unix connectivity and writing code, provided you can still find a copy. If you've never heard of xev, xmodmap, stty, .cshrc and such, I wouldn't recommend it to you. If you are an old hand at Unix and ready to be on your own as far as support is concerned, by all means go ahead.
