Regarding my earlier note that Linux oughta run on a 68LC040 - well it oughta,
but it might not. :)  It depends on the machine, or more specifically on the
particular CPU revision:

So you might want to check the chip. Or, just install it on th 280 and see
if it misbehaves horribly. You can always transplant the drive into a 270.
