I got into the game a lot later than you, so I always found myself doing just the opposite and putting electrician's tape over the hole on 1.4 meg floppies. That way we could go online at school and download stuff to take home to the SE.

HAHAHA Swapping war stories and scars.

My SE was really trick, had the FDHD and a 20 meg internal HD. Learned that little drick that if you drilled a second hole your 800k floppy could then hold 1440k. Usually did it with a nail file. I was amused that the 3.5s were less floppy than the 5.25s, but at least I no longer had to put tape on them to write-protect the contents.
