Sounds like a screen contrast failure.  That happened to me on a 5300, but after a
few weeks the screen worked perfectly.  The proximate cause was an accident that put
moisture in that area, but it did clear up.  See if you can see some outline of the
desktop or other feature behind the whitish screen.  I did, but the contrast could
not be changed and the contrast could not be changed.  I do not know the part that
was the culprit but mine cleared up after a few reboots.
