Hi Tom: If the desktop is a Windows or Linux PC, you'll have some issues to overcome... Mostly incompatible communication without more stuff than you have...
If the desktop PC is a Mac (hopefully) and is of an old enough vintage to have an Appletalk port, you can get a couple of Phone-net adapters (Farallon and Asante and who knows who else made them) and a piece of phone-cord and localtalk them together. I know that The Computer Store in Portland Oregon still carries phone-net adapters, probably others do too... Or even just find an localtalk cable. If you live in the Portland Metro area, I could give you a set of phone-net adapters or an localtalk cable, and show you how to connect them.
