CardBus is an advanced version of PCMCIA. It is necessary for using newer devices (my
understanding is that it is related to the PCI slot technology)....especially things
like modem/ethernet combo cards, PCMCIA video cards, USB PC Cards, etc.

Apparently the 2400 had the capability to support CardBus, but it wasn't enabled by
default (IBM never got around to it or something).

According to www.sineware.com/mac2400, MCE (www.powerbook1.com) has been able to find
a safe way to enable CardBus (although apparently it requires upgrading to a G3
processor and Mac OS 8.6) on the 2400, which apparently works pretty well.
