I recently had occasion to test a IX Micro Road Rocket "cardbus version" card in my unmodifited 2400c. The skinny is that it does not work. My Powerbook was manufactured the 40th week of 1997, fairly late in the game, I think. Tattletech reports both that Cardbus is suported and and the CS Level = 3.0, just like in the case of the gentleman with the USB card working successfully. The installer CD that came with the Road Rocket installed without a hitch, but if the card is in place during boot (as recommended) the machine never gets past the point of the hard drive starting to spin. Black screen -- that's it. If I try to insert the card after start up, no icon appears on the desktop. Nothing appears on the second monitor (I tried an HP and a Sony. The HP reported 'no signal' and the Sony was just black.) The Finder unexpectedly quits when I try to shut down. Another issue is that the eject button will not eject the card. I don't know if it is simply because of the excess mass of the card (which hangs out of the back of the machine a couple of inches and takes up both PC slots), but in any event, it has to be pulled out manually -- not something I'm comfortable with doing repeatedly. I tried letting the machine begin booting without the card in place; then when the smiley mac appears inserting the card. The card proceeds through startup, draws a blank menu bar, give me the watch cursor and never finishes drawing the screen -- though I still have cursor movement. If I try to remove the card at this point, I get a message that 'the PC card is in use; removing it at this point may damage documents that are using it; please reinsert it to avoid this damage.' It seems possible that cardbus is not completely enabled on the 2400 and that the USB card doesn't neet the part that isn't enabled -- but I don't know. I am happy to continue experimenting if anyone has any suggestions. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net! A listserv for users and fans of Mac subportables.
