Dear All -
The concensus of opinion seems to be that the third port on the
mini-dock is a pass-through for the internal modem so that Apple only
had to ship one flavour of mini-dock in Europe, and then could sell
adaptors (cheap to make, ostensibly high profit margin, but a bugger
to track through the inventory I'd've thought!) for each country to
keep local telcos happy.
A first small note, my two UK PowerBooks (a 100 & 280c) both have
internal modems, and both have US-style RJ-11 outlet ports on the
'Book itself. It's just the mini-dock that has a mini-DIN.
A second small note - Michael I'm talking about the mini-dock, so
have no experience about the DuoDock that you are talking about.
(There's no room in a mini-dock for a hard drive!). Like you, the
issue of using the internal modem nags, it'd be much faster to use a
faster external modem, and anyway, when I'm in the office I use my
desktop and ISDN connection anyway!
So now I need to make up a connector with a mini-DIN plug on one end,
and a BT plug on the other. I'm sure there's a name for the BT plug
(it's about the same size as an RJ-45 but has the latch on the side).
When I have some time (it's the summer Hugh, you have the time!) I'll
make up a cable and try David's elicitation of wire matching1 (What
*is* the combinatrial expansion of 4 (BT plug) and 8 (mini-DIN plug)?)
Regards
Hugh Browton
