Yeah. Even the PowerBook 1400 was kind of cool in that it had that system for putting
in a custom cover.....I don't know if any of these replacement covers are sold any
more, but I think it was a really cool idea.....and it's too bad they didn't offer
something like that with the iBook.
I think the whole phenomenon of people customizing their Macs, painting them, etc. has
more to do with the bond the user has to the computer.
As both a Mac and a PC user, I can at least say that I feel very differently towards
my Mac than my PC. I feel like my PC is a PC.....I use it, and that is about it. I
don't particularly care about it though, and I certainly don't love it.
There's something about the whole Mac experience that makes me feel a closer bond to
the machine and the OS. Of course, this was intentional - the Mac was designed to be
friendly and to make its users feel this way towards it. And this is one of the big
things that I think people don't get that aren't specifically Mac users.
You can hear someone say "oh, yeah...Windows is just as easy to use as Mac OS now",
which may technically be true. But Windows doesn't have any soul...and this is a
result of how and why Windows was developed. Windows was developed to basically try
and duplicate the Mac (there's nothing that gets me more than when people report the
annecdote Bill Gates says about how MS actually stole from Xerox, and did it before
Apple, because it isn't true.....MS was not into it at all until they saw the Lisa and
the Mac.....that's another difference between
Apple and MS....the Apple people saw the GUI and the work done at Xerox,
and instantly saw all the flaws and problems, and also saw all the possibility
in it....and then created something that was really a masterpiece...
MS only saw the face of the Mac, and took 7 years to get something that
was barely even useable).
But I digress....:)
