I used the 3JTech for a while and Paul is absolutely right. The Duo will slow you
down no matter how fast the connection. I do not agree that the performance is
"spectacular". Frankly, the speed at which web pages loaded on my 2300 while using
the 3JTech was not much faster than using the internal 14.4 connection. Downloads
were quite a bit faster though. If you do a lot of downloading on the road, I'd
get it. If you just want to surf the web, you should probably get a G3 PowerBook
(No kidding). You might find a way around this if you revert to using early
versions of Netscape Navigator or IE, as I know some of the sluggishness comes
from the way these programs operate (particularly Java implementation). The latest
versions are lumbering behemoths even on fast machines! Unfortunately the 2300
does not have the video or bus support to handle modern web browsers, so no matter
how fast your modem, the bottleneck is inside your Duo. You are probably better
off with your 28.8. Frankly, I did not find that the 3JTech was any more portable
than a regular external modem. The way it's constructed, you have to plug & unplug
the ADB cables every time as well as run phone cords to the Duo & the wall anyway.
Since you have to plug in your Duo to surf anyway, I don't find plugging the extra
power cable into the wall much of an inconvenience. In fact, it can be easier as
far as clutter goes, because a regular modem can be anywhere in the room as long
as you have a long phone cord. The 3JTech is a mess of wires and stuff right next
to your computer. Skip it!
