While there are no guarantees, the picture is actually quite a bit
brighter than that.
Item the First: I have run MacOS X Server on my 2400. It can be
done. Not too difficult, either.
Item the Second: Unless they change the OS X Client kernel a lot, it
ought to still work.
Item the Third: Even if they do change it enough that it no longer
works, there is still hope. The UNIX kernel is the part of OS X
which needs to understand the particular machine OS X is running on.
The rest of OS X is not machine-specific. Apple has made the OS X
kernel open source through the Darwin project. So long as they stick
to updating Darwin and keep it synced with the OS X Client kernel, it
will be possible for other people to port the Darwin kernel to older
machines such as the 2400. Once Darwin is running on a machine, it
should be possible to install the rest of OS X around it.
