Subject: Re: 2400 Upgrade cards
Dear Duolistas,
It is true that we at MCE are going to import the Interware 320MHz
cards w/1MB cache directly from Japan. The price will be $1099. FYI,
this card goes for between $1375 to $1425 USD in retail shops in Japan.
The 400MHz card you may or may not have heard about was a false alarm...
it was being considered but has since been dropped.

We need 10 confirmed orders before it makes sense to bring any in. We have
about 8 so far.

part of me is tempted, but ....
I almost went for a Newer 240 card at $400 or so, but I just couldn't justify
paying more to upgrade a box that is rapidly being outmoded. A die-hard 2400
owner might think differently, and if I had a good *irrational* reason for
upgrading, I would reconsider. The bottom line is that my present 2400c/180 with
maxed out RAM gets the job done. It spends most of its time masquerading as a
desktop; I have it hooked up to a 17" monitor, an extended keyboard, a mouse, an
external CD rom, a magneto-optical disc drive (popular in Japan), an inkjet
printer, a scanner, its original semi-functional floppy disc drive, and a PCMIA
ethernet card connecting via cable modem to the Internet. It looks like an
octopus with cables flailing all over my desk and bookshelf. It handles all
these devices without a sneeze. But on those infrequent occasions when I need to
take it somewhere I can disentangle it in less than a minute and carry it out
the door, self-sufficient and unfazed by its sudden freedom, except that it
never seems quite sure where to relocate all the desktop icons on the smaller
screen.
Better than a desktop actually, because it has a built-in backup power supply.
During a recent thunderstorm my town suffered a sudden power blackout, and I was
in the middle of editing a long document. Figured I'd lost my work and would
have to redo a lot of it, until I noticed the little green light flashing. The
CPU was still running off the battery. After disconnecting all the devices and
reawakening the computer, my work re-appeared on the LC screen just as I had
left it.
So, this owner's strategy is to treat my 2400 like an old car: drive it until it
dies and then use the money saved to buy something new - like a G5/2400.
