Hey,

I sleep my PowerBook 2400 allll the time. In fact it never gets shut down! I
sleep it while plugged in, not, etc. I try not to have it sleep and drain
the battery, which usually means a hard reset.

My 5300 used to have a similar problem--in fact there is an Apple TIL on it.
The solution for now-waking powerbooks seems to be remove the battery, then
remove the a/c plug, then wait a minute, then reinsert battery, reinsert a/c
power, and then do a hard reset by holding the button on the back down for
25 seconds minimum. If you don't hear the chime, hold it down again for
another 20 seconds. If that doesn't work, then you will need a repair
solution.

HTH,
Charles
