I have not done PCS, but I did suffer for a year+ with a GSM modem
while living in Europe. I would *never* *ever* go back to using a
cell phone for data/internet connectivity again. Not only did it
suck, it cost a veritable arm and a leg too. The human ear can at
least try and make sense of a bad voice connection... a computer
doesn't stand a chance at making consistent reliable data connections
over cell networks. Plus, every time you make an attempt the meter
starts running. My average was about 1 good call for every 5/7
attempts. But every attempt/dropped connection still cost me full
freight.
If you are lucky enough to live somewhere in Ricochet's
<http://www.ricochet.net> coverage areas, run, don't walk, to buy one
now. You will never regret it. They are rolling out in virtually
every major US metro area over the next 2 years, and will deploy at
128k as well. Their parent <http://www.metricom.com> (nasdaq: MCOM)
probably is the source for info on rollout schedules.
