A small understanding of the Mac OS code execution mechanism could have
spared this misinformation. Your 68k machine will never try to execute PPC
code in the OS. You might be able to force it to try if you have a fat
application with the 68k code stripped out, in which case the app will fail
to load (not crash) and you'll see a distinctive error message - but it
still won't try to load or execute any PPC code. And since the code will
never be linked or loaded, it will never use space in RAM. The only
exception I can imagine would be PPC code in a CODE resource, and an
incorrect pointer to the resource from 68k code elsewhere (ie. a rather
serious software bug, in which case this unlikely crash is probably the
least of your worries).
You are correct, however, that stripping PPC code on a 68k Mac can save a
substantial amount of hard drive space, and this is the only benefit, which
I note is exactly what the first poster above stated. Though I find the
quoted 30% figure completely out of the blue and unsubstantiable - the
actual amount will be highly variable depending on the apps in question.
Some apps are mostly code, some aren't.
