Just a suggestion...
But you may not want to just have a crossover cable that goes from one
computer to another. What if you add another computer to your home? or a
network printer? In that case, you'd be stuck with only one connection
between 2 devices and you'd have to switch between those devices, say if
you want to print or transfer files to a new computer.
I suggest this instead:
Pick a place for a hub. A good place would be maybe in your upstairs
office, or maybe downstairs in a closet or something depending on where you
might add extra computers or printers. Then run regular Cat 5 cable from
the hub to each of the rooms that you want ethernet. Or if you want, put
the hub in your office and run regular cable down to where you'll be
downstairs. That way, you'll have the option of upgrading, and if you end
up getting more computers, you're all set for the future.
