Tom,

If by "broken" hinge you mean that one side is loose, and that your 2400 
is still working, this happened to mine abut 9 months ago.  Apple told me 
that this was not covered by Applecare since it was "mechanical".  While 
I as thinking about what to do, 2 months later, it died completely.  This 
time, they of course said to send it in.  I did not mention the loose 
hinge.  When I got it back, the hinge was fixed; they made no mention of 
it.

My advice: If you've got several months left on Applecare, start 
commuting by bicycle and carry your powerbook in a case with insufficient 
padding.  Over time, due to the constant vibration, something will break 
inside.  Then have them fix it.
