Hello [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
I assume you have an internal modem installed, since you mentioned that the
AOL modem setup mentioned an internal modem port. If you don't know if
there is an internal modem in the 2300, see if there is a phone jack behind
one of the legs.
8.5 was the last OS I was able to use reliably with my Global Village
internal modem on the 2300c. The GlobalFax software was incompatible under
8.5, but there may be other fax software out there that will work with your
modem(s). GV indicates no interest in updating either the fax software or
the modem software beyond its current version - 2.5.5. The only other
internal modem you could have in your computer is the one made by Apple,
and I have no experience with this unit.
The following observations relate to a docked 2300c, but may work when
undocked. When docked, I was able to make an external modem work under OS
8.5 by plugging it into the dock's printer port, and connecting the printer
to the modem port. The external modem will not operate at anywhere near its
rated speed unless you can configure the serial port to "normal" instead of
the default "compatible". You will have to set the port configuration every
time you boot the 2300, as it resets to "compatible". Port configuration is
accomplished via the powerport control panel if you have the Global Village
internal modem. (For the Apple modem, I assume that the port can be
configured via the control panel related to this modem (not the modem
control panel).)
Setting the port configuration to "normal" is necessary in order to print
on my Epson 740, and this does work under OS 8.6.
At present, I am going to evaluate OS9 and see how the internal modem
works. If I can come up with a workaround, the modem stays in the 2300 for
faxing and e-mail on the road. If I really like OS9, but the modem is
hopeless, I'll remove it and use an external all the time. If I'm
indifferent about OS9 on the 2300, I'll keep the modem and reinstall OS
8.5. The modem eventually causes OS8.6 to crash when the modem is powered
on, so I am able to do light browsing and e-mail but no faxing under 8.6.
I've aired this issue on the duolist before, so if there is any new input
both Mooshall and I would appreciate it.
