Hello Everybody,

since my 2400c works like a charm again I'd like to let you know what happened, and
how I fixed it.
I experienced all the same problems that most users had: Green light, faint click etc.
Also I realized that even though the book would not start up and the hard disk would
not spin up, it would still get hot which means the processor was somehow working.
First I thought the motherboard was dead and I planned to send it in for repair to
DT&T.
But before I invested all this money (alone shipping the 2400 from Germany to the
States is about 150 $ !!!) Mathis came over and we checked on my book by exchanging
parts from his working 2400 to my dead one. (Big shout out to Mathis Groendahl !!!)
After we swapped the processor boards, mine worked again, his did not. Bingo!
So I ordered a NuPower G3 from MCE, installed it and voil... Back to normal again,
though pretty much faster thanks to the G3 (incredible!!!).

Now I was wondering why the processor died.
I'm taking some wild guesses: First of all the small brass cylinders that hold the
screws in the case come out of the case very easily according to 1. heat,
2.overtightened screws, happenes easily (you should have seen how my keyboard looked
after a so called apple service technician put oin some RAM )
If you consider all this, than it's clear that the motherboard is not tightened enough
to the case, for the processor to get good contact with the heat sink.- Overheating
problems.

Secondly I'm not 100% sure, but faintly remember the problems starting to begin after
upgrading to Mac OS 8.6 which has the feature to shut down the processor (cycling this
is called according to TattleTech). This feature is in the energy control panel.
In Tattle tech it reads :
Processor cycling is supported = yes
Processor cycling must be on = yes.

I really was not aware of this feature and it was turned off by default.
So maybe this might be a problem too.

All you wisewomen and men of the list let me know whaddayathink.

Now for cardbus:
TattleTech read that cardbus is supported with my machine.
So while I came across a firewire to go card I thought let's give it a try.
I installed the FireWire extensions manually, since the installer would refuse to
install (something like the nessessary hardware was not found...) rebooted and put in
the card: Finder crashed machine froze !
I sez: Goddammit, da dam' thang ain't woiking.
But nevertheless tried it again, by chance inserting the card in the lower slot and:
The Card Mounted.
Since I don't have no devices which are craving for some burnin' wire I can't say for
real if it's really working, but I will try out a 100baseT ethernet cardbus card soon
and let you know.

Until then,

so long

peace, love and the nice life without electronics.

Holger
