I previously suggested that anyone who wants a car adapter for their
computer carefully consider buying an inverter instead. An inverter vhanges
the 12 VDC from your car to 120 VAC.
Just be sure you know what your alternator can safely put out while keeping
you engine running, charging your battery, headlights on, and heater blower
motor and windshield wipers running.
Learn how many hours of full-load inverter power it will take to drain your
battery with the engine turned off.
Be sure you know what size wires are needed and be sure that the inverter
circuit has a fuse/breaker all its own.
Learn about EM noise from the inverter circuitry and how to get rid of
enough of it.
All these problems are routine and elementary considerations for any
car-toy person worth a hoot. But if not properly dealt with, you can get
yourself some unpleasant problems with overloaded alternator, dead battery
easier than you thought, high-loss power wires, excessive EM noise, and
maybe even a fire.
