Greetings from an enthusiastic new Duo 280 owner. About two weeks ago I bought this very new-looking duo with 32 MB of RAM and a Dock with a 250 MB hard drive in it. A floppy dock and the odd little SCSI adapter that plugs into the SCSI port on the Dock were also part of the package. I've downloaded the Getting Started manual for both the Duo and the Dock, have perused Apple's FAQ, and have written to a few owners about the peculiarities of this particular machine. I have two curiousities. The first is the confusing fact that the Express Modem will only work with a phone line if I reverse the polarity of the line (untwist the twisted pair of a standard phone cable. What it does if I just use a standard twisted pair phone cable is it immediately offhooks the phone and leaves it that way. It does this even when the Duo is powered off. But reverse the polarity of the phone cable and the modem is happy as a clam. The second curiousity is that whenever I put the Duo into the Dock I get a loud sputtering noise and no start. The Dock HD spins up but there is no screen and no main startup. If I then turn it off using the power button on the Dock, or by using the three-fingered salute, it boots normally. However, and here's the mystery, if I then take the Duo out and boot it alone I get the same sputtering and failure to boot. I can boot repeatedly either docked or solo after that first little fit of sutbbornness. But I can't boot the first time after changing to either docked or solo. I still think it's very neat to have such a tiny machine doing so much work, but I would like to be able to use the dock for backup and troubleshooting. Oh, by the way, there is a working system folder on the Dock HD. And my docking experiments have been done with at least one SCSI device running from the Dock SCSI port via that little adapter that has the switch and the diode on it.
