Oh, in addition to the random typing [which the original poster had, nad
so did I],I now see someting like you described.  OCCURS in one place: 
It periodically renames one particular prefernce file with random
characters such as you desscribe. I replace that prefernce file with a
copy of an old stable one. After a while, it renames it again. {i don't
think system 9.0 wants to work with MacTCP p - it renames the MacTCP
DNR.} The only other instance of "apples and squares" that I get is
sometimes during an error message. in the error box. If the system is
overloaded enough to require re-start, the error message before the
restart often has apples and squares.


FWIW, I agree with whoever said it is a software problem. 
However, when I had random alphanumerics on system 7.1 Duo 230, re-setting
th epower manager and otehr obviosu maintenance tasks took care of it.
