No, it does not look at the other folder. If it ain't present, it ain't
loaded.
For 8.5 or higher, you need:
Extensions
Text Encoding Converter
Finder
Fonts
Charcoal
Chicago
Geneva
Monoca
System
System Resources
All that needs to be added to 8.0, 8.1 systems is the Appearance Extension
and believe it or not, thats it! If you add the appropriate Mac OS Rom
file, it will even boot iMacs, etc. Those above will boot any computer
that can run 8.5 or higher. BUT, don't attempt to run a G4 on an 8.5
version of this, etc.
If you want to do any configuring once you've gotten this setup and are
booted off it, you can run control panels from their old location, and
they will update preference files in the NEW system configuring it
properly. REMEMBER to run Memory and turn off VM, as that will keep your
hard disk spinning constantly.
Depending on what App's you want to run, add whats necessary only.
