I have a theory for John.
If you're connecting (i.e. the modem yodels and you're not disconnected),
and nothing is showing up in the web browser or email, then the TCP/IP stack
isn't initializing, or isn't initializing correctly. So I would check:
1)Settings inside the TCP/IP control panel. Do you have a valid DNS IP
address? Is TCP/IP set to "Remote Access" or quite what?
2)Inside of Remote Access, is the protocol negotiation set to "automatic,"
or is it set to "ARAP" or "PPP?" You might want to force it to be "PPP."
3)If everything works great with 8.6, make sure to copy down every single
setting on a piece of paper (especially those nested deep within Remote
Access!), and make sure that they're all set equivalently under 9.
4)Your ISP may require a special login script- usually you have some sort of
authorization scheme, (with a wierd name like PAP or CHAP), and then once
you're in, ppp is started automatically, but this ISP may require ppp to be
started manually (just a guess). Again, only your ISP can answer this.
And by the way, Apple is right- the 2300 has a completely different logic
board than the 6200, complete with different ASICs, and different
architecture.
I'm personally running 8.1 on my 2300 as it's got a smaller memory
footprint, but 9 on my desktop (beige G3) has no problems whatsoever
accessing the internet.
I hope this helps,
-Nathan

Subject: [Duo] Blank internet windows--OS9
>>>Any 2300 Duoistas having trouble with OS9 and using the internet?
To make a month-long story short (and this is the short version), I have
done everything recommended by Apple service; upgraded my GV modem ROM drive
and updated Open Transport but nothing has changed the problem. I can
connect to my internet provider; successfully log in and connect at a
decent speed of 49330bps. There is an initial surge of information which
dies when nothing responds. Both the browser and the e-mail windows remain
blank and no data comes through.
I can reach Apple's test 1-(800) site and can successfully download the
page. Apple says that means it is the provider's problem and not the
software.
The provider says it has an imac and a 6200 working fine with OS9 on their
set-up and if they are working fine then it is either my problem or Apple's
software.
Apple says that means nothing as 2300 is different from the other machines
previously mentioned (even though the 6200 use the same 603 chip). The
provider says that is b.s.
Apple has thrown up their hands and said 'not their problem'....the provider
has done the same and I'm in the middle looking at a system I've bought that
I can't use if I want to connect to the internet.
Clean install or system upgrade from OS6....tried both with same result.
I've installed only the system and the software for the modem and run only
the extensions necessary to be on the internet....nothing after login.
I'm sending this with OS 8.6 and no problem so there is nothing wrong with
my configuration.
>>>>What's the real story???? Does OS9 work on the 2300 for the internet?
