My guess is that it's an anomaly. It's not that your keyboard and trackpad broke, but that your system crashed as it woke from sleep, perhaps due to re-establishing Appletalk or something. . .

If you never turn your Mac off, it probably good to run a program called Mac OS Purge periodically if you open and close programs a lot. The program is supposed to clear out fragmented memory (whatever that is.) I use it just after a program crash so I can keep working long enought to do a safe system shutdown. VersionTracker should have it.
