>2. Will a Type III work with a 230 running OS 7.6.1?

Yes, and without the need for any enabler or battery update (the same
applies to 7.5.x). It should last quite a long time, too (around six hours
without trying very hard in a Duo 230 12/240). I have found that it can be
helpful to reset the power manager when switching up to a better or newer
battery; it won't actually affect the runtime, but the low-power warnings
can be a little screwy for a while otherwise (since the learned behaviour
of the old battery no longer applies).

If you want to use a Type III in a 68030 Duo with System 7.1.x, you do need
either the Type III Battery extension or the Duo Enabler 2.0, but anything
after 7.5 has the support rolled in. For people with external battery
chargers, booting a post-7.5 Duo with the charger attached to the AC
adaptor will also update that (though I really don't know how).
