Just thought I'd share a quick success story with y'all... My Duo 280c, HD wouldn't read or mount, made repetitve power-up skritchety skritch-power down cycles. So I bought a used 320 Meg. (other HD was 1.1 G :( ) Physical install was straightforward, except for getting the case open and closed, broke 2 little plastic tab thingies that don't show anyways, and stuck a piece of cardboard under one corner of the keyboard that was flexing alarmingly. I made 19 install floppies on my girlfriend's G3, installed 7.6. Made appletalk connection between the two, installed Nisus writer, everything works. Happy happy joy joy. Then today I found SpellCatcher in the returned/discount shelf at MicroCenter for $30. Now I need 8.1 on the Duo, my 8.0 install disk doesn't have the disk images for floppies like 7.6 did. It is designed to be installed from the CD only. I tried just mounting the Duo's HD on the G3's desktop and running the installer, but I got a message saying it could not install on this computer (?). I then tried to use the G3's system disk (8.1 instead of the retail 8.0) and got a message saying it could not be installed over a network. So I appletalked just the minimum I thought i needed from the retail 8.0 CD to the hard drive on the duo; The two installer icons (Mac OS Install and Install Mac OS 8), the System Software, Open Transport, and Maclink Plus folders from the Software Installers folder, and the entire Utilities folder. I placed these pieces (which were still a 35 minute appletalk transfer) in a folder named Mac OS 8 on the desktop (the same name as the installer CD) and ran the installer. I opted for a clean install, custom. I unchecked everything but MacLink Plus and Open Transport, and hit go. It ran flawlessly! Now I'll go download the 8.1 updater, or see if i can use just it off the G3's system disk. Well, I thought everyone might like a success story instead of a problem, for a change! --Abe N. ---------- Duo/2400 List, The friendliest place on the Net!
