Thanks for all the input folks. What I've come up with comes
entirely from a devoted Duo user who works in one of two wonderful Apple
tech shops in our town. The shop owner also uses Duos a lot, so they mulled
on it and decided that the best bet temperature-wise was to use a
"thermistor", which is the combo thermostat-switch uses in some of the
PowerBooks to power the fan up and down as needed.
But then the brilliant idea they came up with was that they were
noticing that some fans they were getting to replace burn-outs on LC 475's
were so completely quiet they often had to get their ear very close to be
able to be certaiin that it was working.
So their suggestion was to yank the power supply, after they had a
chance to make sure they had that particular model of fan handy, and bring
it in to compare. (The fan is mounted as part of the PS)
This could be simplest and smartest solution...as in the safest way
to get it a lot quieter.
Now I just have to find that particular fan.

ps...other 475 users say their fans are that quiet also...even that they
had thought their model didn't have or need one.
